Welcome to Transient Spaces (week 1)

In this week’s lecture we looked at the concept of “Symphonic Literacy”
and how media literacy can alter our relationship with networked media.

A key to understanding these new technologies is perhaps best carried
out by actively engaging, or participating in the act of reading, writing
and viewing the new media forms that are emerging in the networked
landscape.

Over the course we will examine and explore some of the issues and
concepts relevant to networked media. Digital technologies provide
consumers with the necessary tools to challenge conventional modes
of production, authorship, distribution, story, and community.

Throughout the course we will focus on blogging skills and work
towards the completion of a documentary with a focus on COMMUNITY.
Community can mean so much, so I urge you to narrow down the focus
of your documentary.

Types of community may include:

Gamers
Virtual (Second Life)
Ethnic
Prison
Knitting
Self Help Groups
Local Groups
My Space, Ning, Facebook, etc

More information can be found on the Transient Spaces course guide.

NOTE: All student are required to set up a blog. I recommend
wordpress.com, as it is very easy to use. Please email your blog url
to dean.keep@rmit.edu.au

Enjoy the class.

Cheers,

Dean
